A list of 4-inch days from the official NCEP HPC precipitation analyses during the 1991-2000 period

A 10 year climatology has been compiled of 4 inch or greater rainfall amounts in 24 hours using the HPC precipitation analyses during a 10 year period (1991-2000). Each manaully prepared analysis covers the 24-h period ending at 1200 UTC. The smallest area that is analyzed on these maps is approximately 1024 sq. km. Therefore, very localized heavy rainfall events may not show up in the climatology (Korty personal communication). Each day an analyzed 4-inch or greater amount occurred, states included within the area were listed. The column on the left-hand side of the table showing times and dates are the times judged to be just prior to or during the event. These times were used to identify events to look at closer using climatological data using from the NCEP reanalysis project for closer scrutiny of the synoptic patterns associated with each 4-inch event. The latitude and longitude colum indicates the approximate center of the area of heaviest rainfall. This center was chosen subjectively because the shapes of heavy precipitation is often very irregular and because there were often several 4 inch or greater amounts analyzed during an event. Sometimes, more than one synoptic scale system that produced 4 inches or more. In these cases, a seperate center was included for each system. The amounts listed in the fourth column from the left are the maximum amounts analyzed during each synoptic event. Users should note, however, that HPC analyze any areas of greater than 7 inches because of their rarilty and typical small scale. The comment of the right had side of the table are subjective thoughts about the scale of the 4-inch or greater area for that time of year and/or thoughts about the synoptic pattern, type of front, or strength of the low-level jet associated with the event.
