A number of factors make the QPF associated with mesoscale convective systems very difficult
Have to correctly predict the initiation of convection
need to correctly predict the morphology (size and shape) of the convection system.
Have to predict the different rainfall rates within the system as it evolves
Have to predict its movement which may vary with time
The scale of the heaviest rainfall within the MCS is often very small
