Storm Summary Number 10 for Southern Plains to Southeastern U.S.
Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
1000 PM EST Sun Dec 09 2018
...A major winter storm begins to wind down across parts of the
Southern Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic...
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories stretch from
the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys into the southern Appalachians and
Tidewater.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 900 PM EST...A low pressure system with a central pressure of
1000 mb, 29.53 inches of mercury, was located off of the Carolina
Coast, approximately 40 miles east of Morehead City, North
Carolina. This system was moving northeastward along a warm front
that stretched offshore of the Southeast coast. Aloft, an eastward
moving upper level disturbance was located over Tennessee.
Moisture streaming ahead of the upper level disturbance was
overrunning the frontal boundary allowing for widespread
precipitation across the southern Mid-Atlantic. National Weather
Service radar and surface observations indicated a thinning of
precipitation bands as the low weakened and began drifting into
the Atlantic. A wintry mix and light snow were falling over
central Virginia and northern North Carolina. Light to moderate
rain observed in southeast Virginia.
