At 300 PM EST...A low pressure system with a central pressure of
1006 mb, 29.70 inches of mercury, was located off of the Carolina
Coast, approximately 30 miles southeast of Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina. This system was moving northeastward along a warm front
that stretched offshore of the Southeast coast. Aloft, an eastward
moving upper level disturbance was located over eastern Tennessee
and leading to wintry precipitation in Tennessee and Kentucky.
Moisture streaming ahead of the upper level disturbance was
overrunning the frontal boundary allowing for widespread
precipitation across the southern Mid-Atlantic. National Weather
Service radar and surface observations indicated that cold light
rain and snow were falling over Tennessee and Kentucky, into the
Southern Appalachians. Widespread heavy snow was falling across
northern North Carolina, southern and central Virginia. Sleet and
freezing rain was falling across central North Carolina.
