Tropical Depression #19 -  October 2-10, 1970

Originally designated Tropical Depression #35 using a numbering system which spanned both the
eastern Pacific and Atlantic Basins, this system was the 19th depression in the Atlantic Basin during
the 1970 hurricane season.  A strong tropical wave  moved off the coast of Africa on September 23rd,
becoming a tropical depression soon after moving into the tropical Atlantic.  The depression moved
just north of due west, reaching the Lesser Antilles by October 1st.  The system moved through the
eastern Caribbean sea before turning northward on the 5th and 6th, moving across the Dominican
Republic on the morning of the 8th.  The depression weakened as it turned eastward a few hundred
miles of Puerto Rico, and moved well southeast of Bermuda on the 11th.  The graphics below show
the storm total rainfall for the tropical depression...data was provided by the National Climatic Data
Center in Asheville, NC.  This is the wettest known tropical cyclone to impact Puerto Rico.
