...A MAJOR WINTER STORM HAS BEGUN TO AFFECT THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI
VALLEY...
 
WINTER STORM WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FROM PORTIONS OF
OKLAHOMA/KANSAS EASTWARD THROUGH THE TENNESSEE VALLEY AND INTO THE
LOWER MID-ATLANTIC. BOUNDING THIS REGION TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH
ARE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES. IN ADDITION...ICE WARNINGS HAVE
BEEN ISSUED ALONG THE NORTH CAROLINA/SOUTH CAROLINA BORDER.
 
FLASH FLOOD WATCHES AND FLOOD WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT ACROSS
PORTIONS OF THE GULF COAST STATES

AT 200 PM CST...A NOW HIGHLY PROGRESSIVE WEATHER SYSTEM WAS
SPREADING WIDESPREAD PRECIPITATION TO THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI AND
TENNESSEE RIVER VALLEYS...AND BACK INTO OKLAHOMA AND KANSAS. THIS
COMPLEX OF PRECIPITATION CONSISTED OF DISTINCT BOUNDARIES OF THE
PRECIPITATION TYPES WITH LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW FALLING ACROSS
MUCH OF OKLAHOMA/SOUTHERN KANSAS AND EASTWARD THROUGH NORTHERN
ARKANSAS AND INTO MUCH OF TENNESSEE. FARTHER TO THE
SOUTH...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WERE BREAKING OUT...ESPECIALLY
NEAR THE SURFACE LOW CENTER ALONG THE CENTRAL GULF COAST. THIS
SURFACE CYCLONE WAS LOCATED JUST TO THE NORTHWEST OF
LAFAYETTE...LOUISIANA AND WAS MOVING EAST AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH.
MEANWHILE...IN BETWEEN THE AREAS OF RAIN AND SNOW WAS AN AXIS OF
FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET WHICH WAS AFFECTING MUCH OF SOUTHERN
ARKANSAS AND INTO NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI AND NORTHERN ALABAMA.

THE UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM CURRENTLY OVER NORTHERN TEXAS
WILL SLOWLY PUSH EASTWARD THROUGH THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
TONIGHT. IN ADDITION...A SURFACE LOW PRESSURE CENTER ALONG THE
CENTRAL GULF COAST WILL CONTINUE TO PROGRESS EASTWARD THROUGH
SATURDAY MORNING WHILE GENERALLY MAINTAINING ITS INTENSITY. THE
COMPLIMENTARY PAIR OF LOW CENTERS WILL SUPPORT SNOWFALL THIS
EVENING FROM EASTERN OKLAHOMA...SOUTHEASTERN KANSAS INTO SOUTHERN
MISSOURI. THE HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED TO PUSH EASTWARD TONIGHT
AFFECTING TENNESSEE...SOUTHERN KENTUCKY...SOUTHERN VIRGINIA AND
WESTERN TO CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA. SNOW TOTALS IN EXCESS OF 4
INCHES POSSIBLE ACROSS THESE AREAS. IN ADDITION TO THE HEAVY SNOW
THREAT...THERE WILL BE THE THREAT OF SIGNIFICANT ICING THIS
EVENING FROM PORTIONS OF ARKANSAS EASTWARD THROUGH MUCH OF THE
TENNESSEE RIVER VALLEY.
