Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 306 AM EST Mon Jan 23 2023 Valid 00Z Tue Jan 24 2023 - 00Z Tue Jan 31 2023 A period of lighter winds with variable direction is expected as a front approaches western and central Islands by Tuesday. After the frontal passage, stronger northeasterly flow will return to the state midweek, especially northwest of the Big Island. There will also be an uptick in the coverage of shower and thunderstorm activity. There continues to be a growing consensus for a closed low aloft to form later in the week as the amplifying trough associated with the cold front mentioned above builds southward to around 30 degrees north. Depending on the proximity to the Islands this feature could increase rainfall and wind speed. Campbell
