Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 213 AM EST Fri Feb 24 2023 Valid 00Z Sat Feb 25 2023 - 00Z Sat Mar 4 2023 The inverted surface trough over the far northwestern Islands Friday morning will continue retrograding towards the west through the weekend. A big subtropical high will be building north of the state, centered generally near 35-40 degrees north, through early next week. This will maintain breezy to windy trades from generally the east-northeast through most of the forecast period, with winds gusting over 35 mph at times, along with very rough surf. The presence of a weak upper trough and PWs on the order of 1.0 to 1.5 inches with sustained orographic lift will maintain the potential for heavy rainfall across the windward terrain, particularly across the Big Island. The rainfall should wane in intensity some for these areas going into the middle to end of next week as a slightly drier low-mid level airmass moves into the region. Hamrick
