Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 255 AM EST Tue Mar 07 2023 Valid 00Z Wed Mar 08 2023 - 00Z Wed Mar 15 2023 A cold front along with some showers currently moving over Maui is forecast to weaken over the Big Island today. But another cold front is expected to shift into the northwestern islands this evening along with a band of enhanced moisture and showers per model guidance like the HREF. An upper low will continue to push the front across the state tonight and into Wednesday, and then the fronts should clear the state completely. Breezy conditions are likely ahead of the front but winds are likely to strengthen further behind the front on Wednesday. Since these winds will be westerly, counter to the normal trade wind direction, this could cause increased impacts like downed trees. The front will also clear out the moisture for a drying trend into Thursday and remaining through late week, with lower dewpoints and few if any showers. Westerly winds are forecast to gradually weaken by Friday and remain on the weaker side into the weekend given a weak pressure gradient at the surface. Moisture levels should increase at some point early next week, but there remains considerable uncertainty about the timing of any moisture return. Tate
