Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 252 AM EST Wed Mar 08 2023 Valid 00Z Thu Mar 09 2023 - 00Z Thu Mar 16 2023 An upper low centered north of Hawaii around 35N latitude is extending troughing south atop the state, while at the surface a cold front is pushing across and focusing a band of moisture along and ahead of it. This cold front is forecast to clear the state by tonight/Thursday. Breezy conditions are likely ahead of the front but winds are likely to strengthen even further behind it. Since these winds will be westerly, counter to the normal trade wind direction, this could cause increased impacts like downed trees. Areas of downsloping could locally increase the winds. The front will also clear out the moisture for a drying trend into Thursday and remaining through late week, with lower dewpoints (allowing for minimum temperatures to fall as well) and few if any showers. Westerly winds are forecast to gradually weaken by Friday and remain on the weaker side into the weekend and early next week given a weak pressure gradient at the surface. Relatively higher moisture levels (though nothing too considerable initially) and nearer to normal temperatures are forecast to return early next week. But model guidance is already advertising that enhanced moisture is possible over at least the northwestern islands by around midweek next week ahead of a stalled or meandering front. Tate
