Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 346 AM EDT Wed Aug 30 2023 Valid 00Z Thu Aug 31 2023 - 00Z Thu Sep 07 2023 On Wednesday, trade winds will be starting to strengthen to breezy levels as surface high pressure northeast of the state drifting west will increase the pressure gradient. A weak plume of moisture is likely to push westward through the islands, which could lead to a few clouds and showers across windward/mauka areas and should protect from conditions being too dry on Wednesday. But unfortunately, drier dewpoints and humidity looks to be in place for Thursday, which along with the breezy to windy trades has led the Honolulu Weather Forecast Office to issue a Fire Weather Watch to monitor the potential for conditions conducive to spreading fires. By the weekend, the winds and moisture levels could both moderate a bit, but still on the breezier and drier side of normal. By early next week though, lowering heights aloft appear possible while the surface pressure gradient could weaken as well. This will lower wind speeds, and model guidance is indicating that moisture could be pulled northward from the ITCZ starting around next Tuesday, likely first for the Big Island and then moving west across the state for midweek, with the details still yet to be determined at this point.
