Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 339 AM EDT Thu Aug 31 2023 Valid 00Z Fri Sep 01 2023 - 00Z Fri Sep 08 2023 A windy Thursday is on tap for Hawaii as a surface high northeast of the state helps strengthen the pressure gradient. Meanwhile ridging aloft and below normal dewpoints and humidity levels will combine with the breezy to windy conditions to lead to the risk of fire danger, and a Red Flag Warning is in effect especially for leeward areas where downsloping can increase winds and lower humidity. By Friday into the weekend, the winds and moisture levels could both moderate a bit, but still on the breezier and drier side of normal. By early next week though, lowering heights aloft appear likely, providing for some possible instability. A weakening surface pressure gradient should lead to decreasing trade winds and perhaps more of a land/sea breeze pattern. Increasing showers are possible especially when and where moisture levels increase. There is a chance of a brief incursion of moisture particularly for the northwestern islands around Monday, but chances of a greater moisture surge from the ITCZ into at least the Big Island by around midweek or so, with the details still yet to be determined at this point.
