Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 459 AM EDT Sun May 05 2013 Valid 12Z Sun May 05 2013 - 12Z Tue May 07 2013 ...Soaking Rains Expected Across the Tennessee Valley...Southeast...and Southern Mid-Atlantic States... ...A Closed Low Drifting off the California Coast Will Bring an Increase of Moisture To the Western U.S.... Soaking rains are expected across the Tennessee Valley...Southeast...and southern Mid-Atlantic states the next few days as a cut-off upper low remains relatively stagnant over the Deep South. An abundance of Atlantic moisture getting pulled ahead of a wrapped up cold front pivoting northward through the Southeast will fuel an organized band of moderate to heavy rains. The slow progression of the front will lead to a threat for flash flooding...especially over the eastern slopes of the southern to central Appalachians where upslope flow will help enhance rainfall amounts. A second cut-off low drifting off the California Coast will bring unsettled weather to portions of the Western U.S.. Initially shower activity will be fairly isolated...but as onshore flow and moisture increase across California...the Great Basin...and the Southern to Central Rockies...precipitation will become more widespread. The heaviest amounts will be along the favored slopes of the terrain...and any snow accumulations will be confined to the highest elevations.
