Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 213 PM EDT Sun Jun 09 2013 Valid 00Z Mon Jun 10 2013 - 00Z Wed Jun 12 2013 ...Active Weather Pattern Continues Across the Entire United States... ...Searing Heat Expected over the Central High Plains... By this time of the year, the jet stream has normally retreated into Canada, taking stark temperature fluctuations and wet storm systems with it--not so this season. A series of atmospheric disturbances are expected to bring a variety of weather to the contiguous United States during the next few days. An upper low coming ashore over California will drag the marine layer well inland, sparking widely scattered showers and dry thunderstorms. The dry thunderstorms will pose a wildfire threat for much of the far West as the disturbance edges into the Great Basin. Farther north, a strong front will meander across the Pacific Northwest, kicking up winds along the boundary and knocking temperatures down many degrees. East of the Rockies, a departing area of low pressure will leave a pronounced thermal contrast in its wake over the central Great Plains, with triple-digit highs expected over parts of eastern Colorado and western Kansas. The low over the East is forecast to wring out soaking showers and thunderstorms from the Gulf Coast all the way to New England.
