The stage is set for a widespread severe weather and flash flooding event from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic states. Energy ejecting out into the Northern Plains and amplifying over the Great Lakes region will help intensify a surface low as it lifts out of the Central Plains and races towards the northern Mid-Atlantic coast. While the system tracks eastward...an organized area of convection is expected to develop to the north of a strengthening frontal extending eastward from the surface low. These storms will have the potential to produce heavy downpours...damaging winds...large hail...and even tornadoes. The primary threat for severe weather and flash flooding on Wednesday will be across the Ohio Valley...and on Thursday the greatest potential will shift eastward into the Northern Mid-Atlantic region. Also...some storms should start lighting up along/ahead of the trailing cold front as it approaches the central and southern Appalachians Thursday afternoon. Behind this system...cooler and drier air will fill in across Midwest and eventually Mid-Atlantic. Elsewhere across the nation...an upper trough carving out over the Western U.S. will bring an increase in shower activity across the northwestern corner of the Nation. In addition to some scattered showers and thunderstorms...the associated surface front edging inland will bring a decrease in temperatures. Meanwhile...another day of record breaking heat will be possible underneath a strong ridge centered over the south central U.S..
