Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 309 AM EDT Tue Jul 09 2013 Valid 12Z Tue Jul 09 2013 - 12Z Thu Jul 11 2013 ***Cool front to push east southeastward from the Northern Rockies across the Northern Plains, Upper Mississippi Valley into the Midwest*** ***Heavy showers and thundershowers expected to precede the cool front from the Northern Plains to the Ohio Valley*** ***Hot for the Desert Southwest across the Southern Plains and briefly across the Central Plains*** Hot weather will remain over the Desert Southwest and will build northward across the West over the next few days. The heat will also expand eastward across the Southern Plains and across parts of the central Plains but a sharp cold front will limit the duration of the heat over Kansas into Missouri. Temperatures will soar into the 90s to over 100 degrees in Kansas on Tuesday before falling on Wednesday. The major story for the next few days is the development of showers and thunderstorms ahead of a significant push of cooler air current working its way across the Pacific Northwest into Montana. Temperatures have already fallen into the 50s and 60s across Montana as cooler air will work its way south and eastward across the Plains and into the Midwest over the next couple days. A complex area of low pressure will develop along the leading edge of the cool area with possible development of one or more mesoscale convective systems and locally heavy thunderstorms, some of which may become severe across the Northern Plains, Upper Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley and across the Midwest. Some of the heaviest storms are expected to develop across the Ohio Valley, where the possibility of flash flooding exists by Tuesday into Wednesday. Warm humid air will cover much of the East for the next several days with scattered showers and thundershowers across the Southeast, Middle Atlantic States into New England, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Showers and thundershowers will likely be on the increase on Wednesday into Thursday as the cold front over the Midwest approaches the Northeast by early Thursday.
