Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 358 AM EDT Fri Aug 2 2013 Valid 12Z Fri Aug 2 2013 - 12Z Sun Aug 4 2013 ***Improving weather for most of the East Coast states*** ***Stormy weather for the Central Plains and into Missouri*** ***Rainy weather for the Northern Rockies*** After several days of mostly cloudy skies and periods of rain, much of the East Coast should begin to dry out some as a weak cold front reaches the coast. However, showers and a few storms could still affect parts of New England and also for the Southeast coast where the front is expected to remain stalled and gradually dissipate. The upper level energy pivoting around the main low over southeast Canada will provide enough forcing for scattered showers over New England. A stronger cold front is forecast to arrive by Sunday, and this will bring another refreshing and high quality air mass from the Ohio Valley to the East Coast. A frontal boundary stretched from the Upper Midwest to the Central Plains will provide a focus for widespread showers and storms on Friday and Saturday across Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and parts of adjacent states. Given the abundance of moisture and instability across the area, flash flooding and isolated severe weather is not out of the realm of possibilities. As the northern part of the front moves across the Great Lakes, the wet weather is expected to expand into the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic by Saturday. Elsewhere, a closed upper low over the Pacific Northwest is forecast to bring an increase in shower activity and cooler weather on Friday and Saturday for the region. Given the presence of upslope flow and a surface frontal boundary over the Northern Rockies, widespread light to moderate rainfall is likely from eastern Washington state to Montana. Farther south, isolated to scattered convection can be expected each afternoon over the Four Corners region with the monsoonal moisture in place.
