Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 356 PM EDT Thu Aug 08 2013 Valid 00Z Fri Aug 09 2013 - 00Z Sun Aug 11 2013 ...Additional heavy rain and possible flash flooding for KS/OK into MO/AR... ...Localized heavy rain also expected along slow moving cold front from the Ohio Valley into the Northeast... ...Heat in the Southern Plains will expand northward into the central and northern Plains by Saturday... The upper level pattern shows a nearly stationary and relatively weak upper level low centered just off the northern California coastline along with a much larger closed low translating across western Ontario. Between these two systems resides weak mid level disturbances emanating from the Rockies and moving across the Plains/Midwest which are expected to continue triggering bouts of heavy rain. This pattern will stay rather unchanged over the next few days except for the closed low in Canada which tracks east, bringing a cold front through New England for the weekend. A cold front currently draped from the Northeast down into the southern Plains will continue to separate seasonably hot and humid conditions to its south from much cooler and comfortable weather to the north of the front. The front itself, combined with deep moisture pooled near and ahead of the boundary, will continue to support bouts of heavy rain with another large convective complex possible along the Kansas/Oklahoma border, tracking east into Missouri and Arkansas. Heavy rain is expected to lead to flash flooding due to prior episodes of heavy rain from preceding days. Across the West, lower heights associated with the aforementioned upper low just off of northern California will support diurnally driven afternoon/evening thunderstorms across portions of the Northwest into the northern and central Rockies. Ahead of the upper low, mid-level heights will rise across the Rockies and central/northern High Plains as the weekend approaches. The rising heights will cause high temperatures to return into the upper 80s and low 90s across the High Plains with increasing chances of thunderstorms during the evening.
