Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 229 PM EDT Fri Aug 09 2013 Valid 00Z Sat Aug 10 2013 - 00Z Mon Aug 12 2013 ...Localized heavy rain likely in the Northeast and Tennessee Valley... ...Drier and milder air headed into the Northeast this weekend... The general flow pattern features persistent upper troughing near the West coast and increasing troughing across the Great Lakes and Northeast. Ahead of the western trough, scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected across the Pacific Northwest and along the spine of the Rockies each day, with hot and dusty conditions across the Great Basin and Mojave/Sonoran deserts through the period. Increasing troughing across the Great Lakes lures thunderstorm complexes with heavy rainfall out of the Rockies across the Northern Plains into the Corn Belt, associated with a weak surface low. Per guidance from the Storm Prediction Center, any associated severe weather is expected to be isolated in nature. Heavy rainfall across the Northeast sweeps offshore tonight ahead of a cold front moving through the region. Into Sunday evening, the frontal boundary will waver across the Mid-Atlantic states. However, showers and thunderstorms are expected to be shunted southward more along the leading edge of the Westerlies from the Mid-Mississippi valley across the Mid-South, Carolinas, and Virginia. Some of these storms could lead to excessive rainfall across the region through tomorrow night. Along the immediate Gulf coast, scattered thunderstorms will remain a fixture across the region as a packet of upper-level energy moves from the Florida Straits through the Gulf of Mexico.
