Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 529 PM EDT Mon Aug 26 2013 Valid 00Z Tue Aug 27 2013 - 00Z Thu Aug 29 2013 ***More rainfall for the Southwestern U.S.*** ***Late summer heatwave for the Dakotas and Upper Midwest*** For the beginning of the work week, more showers and storms are likely for the Desert Southwest and into the Great Basin. Moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ivo, combined with monsoonal flow from Mexico, will result in scattered showers and thunderstorms from southern California to the Four Corners region. The worst of the heavy rainfall appears to be over, while a few isolated areas of heavier downpours remains a possibility. Over the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, heat will continue making weather headlines for a couple more days. Heat advisories and a few excessive heat warnings are in effect for high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, and heat indices of 100-105+ degrees. Overnight lows in the 70s will also be well above average for late August, and some urban areas near 80 degrees. Slightly cooler weather is expected for the end of the week while still remaining above average. Elsewhere, very warm weather can be expected across much of the Southern U.S. as a large high pressure ridge over the Central U.S. governs the weather pattern and keeps the fronts well to the north. Periods of light rain will be possible near the Pacific Northwest coast where a dying cold front is forecast to approach the region. Scattered showers and storms will also be possible from the Great Lakes to the Northeast. D. Hamrick Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
