Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 259 AM EDT Fri Aug 30 2013 Valid 12Z Fri Aug 30 2013 - 12Z Sun Sep 01 2013 ***Late summer heat continues over the Plains*** ***More showers and storms for the Desert Southwest*** A few more days of high heat and humidity can be expected from the Upper Midwest to the Central Plains as a summer-like ridge pattern tries to hold strong to close out the month of August. Heat advisories are in effect for Iowa and parts of adjacent states for Friday with high temperatures soaring well into the 90s to around 100 degrees, and lows only falling into the 70s along with elevated humidity levels. Cooler and more pleasant conditions are expected for next week with the passage of a cold front. Elsewhere across the continental U.S., scattered showers and storms can be expected for the Desert Southwest and into the Inter-Mountain West with lingering tropical moisture in place. Localized heavy rainfall will be possible. Showers are likely for western Washington state with a frontal system over the near-shore waters of the Pacific Ocean. An organized area of moderate to heavy rainfall can be expected from the northern Great Lakes to New England as a surface low tracks eastward across southern Canada.
