Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 400 AM EDT Sun Sep 22 2013 Valid 12Z Sun Sep 22 2013 - 12Z Tue Sep 24 2013 ***Stormy weather for the Gulf Coast and Florida*** ***High quality airmass moving into the Eastern U.S.*** ***Active weather pattern over the Western U.S.*** The southern part of the cold front that progressed across the Eastern U.S. on Saturday is forecast to stall near the Gulf Coast on Sunday and into Monday. A wave of low pressure on this front over the northern Gulf will help to focus moisture near this front and result in numerous showers and storms from southern Louisiana to the Florida peninsula. Farther to the north from the Carolinas to New England, the cold front is forecast to progress well offshore and allow for the arrival of a fresh and high quality airmass for Sunday and into the beginning of the work week. This surface ridge of high pressure will bring continued fall-like weather with highs in the 60s and 70s, and lows in the 40s and 50s, along with lower humidity. A broad upper level trough will be the main feature governing the weather pattern over the Western U.S. through Monday. This upper trough is forecast to intensify while moving through the Four Corners region, aiding in widespread precipitation over the Central Rockies by Sunday afternoon. There may even be some snow for the highest elevations above treeline in the Central Rockies. Onshore flow over the northern Pacific Coast is expected to continue through the forecast period, and this will aid in orographically driven rainfall for the Pacific Northwest.
