Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 359 AM EDT Wed Oct 09 2013 Valid 12Z Wed Oct 09 2013 - 12Z Fri Oct 11 2013 ...Moderate to heavy rain possible for coastal Mid-Atlantic areas... ...Rain and higher elevation snow expected from the Southwest into the Central Rockies... A piece of upper level energy and associated surface low pressure should continue to strengthen through the short range period as it tracks slowly up the Eastern Seaboard. Moisture streaming inland off the Atlantic around the low is expected to continue the moderate to heavy rain from coastal Carolina to New Jersey. West of this, surface high pressure remains parked across much of the region which should keep areas from the Mississippi Valley to the Appalachians dry and cool through the end of the work week. Elsewhere, an energetic upper level cyclone could trigger some light rain and higher elevation snow showers for parts of the Central Rockies and Southwest states as it dives southward along the Western U.S. coast on Wednesday. As the energy progresses through the the Southwest on Thursday towards the Central Plains, precipitation could intensify and spread into the Southern and Central Rockies and eventually the High Plains. Most of the precipitation across this region should be in liquid form, however some frozen precipitation cannot be ruled out especially in the highest terrain of the Rockies.
