Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 453 PM EDT Wed Oct 9 2013 Valid 00Z Thu Oct 10 2013 - 00Z Sat Oct 12 2013 ***Rainy and windy for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast*** ***Valley rain and mountain snow for the Inter-Mountain West*** ***Nice weather from the Deep South to the Great Lakes*** The cold front that recently cleared the East Coast has stalled over the offshore waters of the Western Atlantic, and a wave of low pressure has developed along this front. This low is developing into a nor'easter and will bring widespread rainfall and gusty winds from eastern North Carolina to southern New England. Gale warnings are in effect for the coastal waters and coastal flood advisories are in effect from the Chesapeake Bay to Long Island. Winds could gust up to 45 mph near the coast, along with at least 2 inches of rainfall. Overcast conditions are likely to continue through the end of the week in these areas. Over the Inter-Mountain West, an energetic upper level low is forecast to generate showers and higher elevation snowfall for the Central Rockies and Southwest states. As the energy progresses through the Southwest on Thursday towards the Central Plains, the precipitation is forecast to become heavier and spread into the Front Range of the Rockies and eventually over the High Plains. Owing to boundary layer temperatures above freezing, most of this precipitation over the Plains should be in the form of rain. Between this system and the nor'easter, pleasant fall weather is forecast to continue through Friday from the Deep South to the Great Lakes. D.
