Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 459 AM EDT Mon Oct 28 2013 Valid 12Z Mon Oct 28 2013 - 12Z Wed Oct 30 2013 ...Unsettled weather expected for the Western U.S.... ...Strong winds and snow will make for blustery conditions across Montana on Monday... ...Heavy rains and severe weather possible over the Southern and Central Plains... A deep upper vortex spinning over the Great Basin will bring unsettled weather to much of the Western U.S. early in the forecast period. Strong dynamics with this system should trigger widespread rain and snow showers on Monday...and strong and gusty winds are expected around the responding surface low deepening over the Great Basin. A limited moisture supply should keep totals light to moderate and mostly focused along the terrain. The deep vortex will gradually edge eastward on Tuesday...and the scattered showers and strong winds should begin to relax across the West. Meanwhile...the cold front that plunged through the northern tier on Sunday will begin to settle in across the Midwest...Central Plains...and back along the Rockies early this week. Strong winds and well below normal temperatures will make for blustery conditions behind the front...and the high winds against the terrain should continue to produce accumulating upslope snows along the front range of the Northern Rockies on Monday. On Tuesday...southerly flow ahead of the deep vortex moving out of the Great Basin will bring increasing amounts of Gulf moisture into the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out across Texas and Oklahoma...with organized and severe storms possible farther north along the frontal boundary settled in across the Midwest and Central Plains. Elsewhere...strong surface ridging moving in over the Great Lakes should keep weather fairly quiet for the Eastern third of the Nation.
