Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 302 AM EST Tue Dec 31 2013 Valid 12Z Tue Dec 31 2013 - 12Z Thu Jan 02 2014 ...Continued bitter cold across the northern Plains and upper Midwest... ...Light to moderate snow to impact parts of the Central and Northern Plains into the Midwest... A very cold airmass will remain in place over the upper Midwest over the next two days as a nearly stationary frontal boundary lingers over NE/KS/MO. Temperatures should be as much as 20 to 30 degrees below normal over ND/MN as high pressure moves overhead tonight into Wednesday. Western end of the frontal boundary will stay just east of the divide in Montana and act as a focus for widespread but generally light snow. Overnight tonight into Wednesday a swath of light snow should spread eastward along the I-90 corridor from Chicago to Erie, PA with continued lake enhanced snowfall over Michigan and western New York. By later in the day, the frontal boundary in the central Plains will move steadily southward and strengthen. By late Wednesday an expansive area of precipitation should develop along/behind the front in addition to lingering moisture along the Gulf Coast as a separate frontal boundary lifts northward. This will set the stage for a deepening system to organize in the Southeast late Wednesday into Thursday. Fracasso Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
