A high impact winter storm will move out of the Midwest and into the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic region. The main surface cyclone driving the event is expected to take a steady track through the Ohio Valley Sunday night...before re-developing and rapidly deepening off the southern New England coast on Monday. A wide axis of moderate to heavy snow will continue to develop to the north of a frontal boundary stretched eastward from the low...which will result in an expansive area of hefty snowfall accumulations stretching across the Lower Great Lakes...through New York...and into the Northeast. In addition to the snow...winds will be strong and gusty surrounding the deepening surface low. Cold air initially entrenched in across central Pennsylvania and southern New England should set up a zone of sleet and freezing rain to the south of the heavy snow axis. Farther south...a cold front extending southward from the low will trigger showers...and even a few thunderstorms...as it presses east towards the central to southern Appalachians and off the Atlantic coast. A series of cold fronts approaching the West Coast will bring widespread precipitation into the northwestern corner of the Nation. Above normal temperatures across the region should keep snow levels fairly high...but some light to moderate snowfall accumulations will still be possible as precipitation spreads eastward over the higher elevation of the northern Rockies. Towards the end of forecast period...moisture returning from the western Gulf of Mexico should fuel rain over south Texas by early Tuesday.
