Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 216 PM EDT Wed May 27 2015 Valid 00Z Thu May 28 2015 - 00Z Sat May 30 2015 ***Stormy weather for parts of the Deep South and southern Plains*** ***Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the western U.S.*** ***Warm and humid across much of the eastern U.S.*** The atmosphere will likely add insult to injury over the southern Plains for the next couple of days with additional heavy rain and strong thunderstorms. Current forecasts are calling for 1 to 3 inches of rain through Friday over much of northern Texas and southern Oklahoma, with isolated higher amounts possible. Given the impressive rainfall over the past week, the ground is quite saturated and it won't take much to cause flooding problems. Patchy areas of heavy rain are also expected for the Deep south. Over the western third of the U.S., mainly diurnally driven showers and thunderstorms can be expected each afternoon and evening from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Instability from a broad upper level trough over the region will promote the development of this convection, and the greatest coverage is expected for Idaho and Montana. A cold front is forecast to drop southward from Canada by the end of the week and bring a noticeable drop in temperatures from the Rocky Mountains to the Upper Midwest as a quality airmass settles back over the northern U.S. The Bermuda high off the East Coast is allowing for building heat and humidity across much of the eastern U.S. this week. Sustained southerly flow and ridging aloft will result in widespread highs in the 80s to lower 90s along with dewpoints well into the 60s to around 70 degrees, which is more typical of late June. Scattered showers and storms will be possible each afternoon, and a few severe storms will be possible. There is a weakening cold front approaching the East Coast on Thursday, but it cooling impact will be minimal. Hamrick Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
