Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 251 PM EST Sat Jan 02 2016 Valid 00Z Sun Jan 03 2016 - 00Z Tue Jan 05 2016 ...Lake effect snow expected downwind of the Great Lakes... ...Wet and cool conditions expected for the Gulf Coast and Florida... A cold front will bring a reinforcing round of cold air into the Great Lakes and Northeastern U.S. Sunday into Monday. The cold air flowing into the region over relatively warm Great Lake waters will result in an increase in lake effect snows downwind of all the Great Lakes. Snowfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts, are possible in these lake effect bands through Monday. Breezy conditions are also expected as colder air rushes in behind the front. Moisture lifting across a frontal boundary in the Gulf of Mexico will bring showers to the Gulf Coast, from Texas to Florida. Showers will affect Texas and the western Gulf Coast states tonight, and will become more widespread across Florida on Sunday. Florida will dry out by Monday as a wave of low pressure develops along the front, moving it east into the Atlantic Ocean. Cloud cover and showers will result in cool conditions along the Gulf Coast, with afternoon high temperatures on Sunday expected to be 5 to 15 degrees below average. Rain and high elevation snow will begin to increase across portions of the West Coast on Sunday as a Pacific frontal system approaches. This system will move into the southwestern U.S. by Monday. At the same time, another cold front will approach the West Coast -- bringing an increase in rain/snow once again on Monday. Ryan Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
