A cold front will move across the Great Lakes and Mid-Mississippi valley today, bringing showers and thunderstorms to those regions. On Monday, the cold front will cross the Appalachians and move toward the Eastern Seaboard. As a result, areas of showers and thunderstorms are expected along the East Coast by Monday afternoon and evening. The trailing end of the front will linger across the southern plains as a stationary front, keeping scattered showers and thunderstorms in the picture across portions of the southern and central plains through the next couple days. Behind the frontal system, a cooler and drier air mass will move into the northern plains and Upper Midwest. Afternoon high temperatures by Monday are forecast to be 5 to 15 degrees below average across those areas. Meanwhile, a ridge of high pressure aloft will keep the western U.S. dry and hot. Temperatures today are forecast to be 5 to 15 degrees above average from the West Coast states into the Great Basin. Temperatures will warm further across the Intermountain West by Monday, with temperatures forecast to be 10 to 20 degrees above average. Temperatures may rise well into the 90s, even approaching 100 for some valley areas of the Intermountain Region by Monday. Ryan Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
