Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 251 AM EST Sat Nov 19 2016 Valid 12Z Sat Nov 19 2016 - 12Z Mon Nov 21 2016 ...Strong storm system lifting northward over southern Canada... ...Sharply colder temperatures arriving to the eastern states... ...More showers and mountain snow for the western states... The first major winter storm of the season is winding down across the Upper Midwest, after multiple reports of 12+ inches of snow across parts of Minnesota. With the main surface low now entering Ontario and then Quebec, cold northwesterly winds across the Great Lakes will lead to the first noteworthy lake effect snow event this fall from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to upstate New York, where numerous winter-related advisories and warnings are in effect. Accumulating snow is also expected for the central and northern Appalachians beginning Saturday night courtesy of upslope flow. In addition to the snow, much colder temperatures will follow with the passage of this cold front across the eastern U.S. Temperature drops on the order of 30 degrees are likely for some areas compared to temperatures that were observed Friday afternoon. Widespread highs in the 30s and 40s are forecast for many areas this weekend and lasting into early next week. The days of Indian summer are over for now. Across the western U.S., another Pacific storm system is expected to bring more showers and mountain snow for this weekend. The heaviest precipitation should be from the Sierra Nevada to the Pacific Northwest coast, and lighter rain/snow across the Intermountain West.
