Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 254 PM EDT Fri Aug 16 2019 Valid 00Z Sat Aug 17 2019 - 00Z Mon Aug 19 2019 ...Heavy Rain, flash flooding and severe weather possible across portions of the Northern/Central Plains into the Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley... ...Heavy rains and flooding possible across Northwest to North Florida into southeast Georgia... ...Hot weather on tap this weekend for large portions of the Western and Eastern halves of the nation... Heavy rains, flash flooding and severe weather are expected to focus in the vicinity of a nearly stationary frontal boundary stretching across portions of the Central Plains into the Middle Mississippi Valley and ahead of a more progressive front sinking southeast across the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley. Thunderstorm activity is expected to be well defined ahead of both fronts where moisture values are expected to be above average. The Storm Prediction Center and the Weather Prediction Center are both highlighting these areas for severe weather and flash flooding potential respectively over the next 2 days. Above average levels of moisture are also expected to focus to the southeast of a stationary frontal boundary forecast to lie from the Central Gulf coast, into the Southeast and Southern Mid-Atlantic. This will bring the potential for several rounds of heavy rains to move off the northeast Gulf of Mexico and across portions of Northwest to North Florida and southeast Georgia over the weekend. With several rounds of heavy rains likely across these areas, flooding will be a threat this weekend across North and Northwest Florida and southeast Georgia, with the Weather Prediction Center highlighting this region in their Excessive Rainfall Outlooks. Above average temperatures will stretch across large portions of western half of the nation from interior California, the Southern Great Basin, Southwest and Central to Southern High Plains. High temperatures expected to be over 100 through the weekend across much of these areas. Much above average temperatures will also be building from portions of the Southeast, Ohio Valley, Lower Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. The hot temperatures and high levels of moisture will result in dangerous afternoon conditions across both of these regions where heat indices of 100 to 105+ are likely. While much of the Lower 48 will experience above to much above average temperatures this weekend, cooler than average temperatures are expected across the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley, in the wake of the southeastward moving cold front across this area, and over portions of Northwest to North Florida into southern Georgia where clouds and rain will keep temperatures cooler than average.
