Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 232 PM EST Mon Feb 28 2022 Valid 00Z Tue Mar 01 2022 - 00Z Thu Mar 03 2022 ...Heavy precipitation and snow melt contributing to avalanche and flooding concerns across portions of the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies... ...Above normal temperatures will expand eastward into the eastern U.S. but cold conditions with periods of light snow remain across the northern tier... Recent heavy rain and snow, along with warming temperatures and high winds have prompted Avalanche Warnings for portions of the Washington Cascades and the northern Idaho and northwestern Montana ranges. Flood Warning and Watches are also in effect across portions of Washington and Oregon, where heavy rain and melting snow are causing excessive runoff and flooding along some rivers and streams. Additional heavy precipitation can be expected across western Washington and northwestern Oregon into the evening before the focus for heavier precipitation begins to shift farther south and precipitation rates begin to diminish some overnight. However, unsettled weather is forecast to continue across the Pacific Northwest into the northern Rockies through the middle of the week as a Pacific system slowly moves onshore. Father to the south from Central and Southern California to the central and southern Rockies, dry conditions and above-normal temperatures can be expected through midweek. A series of fast-moving systems are expected to bring a wintry mix across portions of the northern Plains, Great Lakes and Northeast each day. Accumulations for snow and ice are expected to be light with these systems. Farther to the south, it will feel more like spring. Daytime highs are forecast to climb 10-30 above normal across most places from the central and southern Plains to the Mid Atlantic and Southeast on Tuesday and Wednesday, before colder starts to press south from the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes later this week.
