Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 315 PM EDT Mon Jun 27 2022 Valid 00Z Tue Jun 28 2022 - 00Z Thu Jun 30 2022 ...Cooler weather on tap for the Northwest and Lower Mississippi Valley that have seen recent record highs... ...Heat to build early this week across the Northern to Central Plains... ...Recent wet monsoonal pattern over New Mexico and Arizona to begin to diminish... ..Heavy rains possible along much of the Gulf coast and Southeast... Areas of the Pacific Northwest and Lower Mississippi Valley that have experienced record high temperatures recently will be cooling down going into the middle part of this week. A strong cold front pressing inland off the northeast Pacific and through the Pacific Northwest tonight into Tuesday will drop temperatures to below average across the Pacific Northwest Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile, another cold front currently moving south into the Gulf coastal region will also be delivering cooler temperatures for areas of the Lower Mississippi Valley that also have seen record highs over the past weekend. To the north of this front along the Gulf coast, an area of high pressure will stretch from the Southern Plains, eastward across the Mid Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley. Clear skies and dry air associated with this area of high pressure will support much below average morning low temperatures both Tuesday and Wednesday morning across these regions. While cooler temperatures move into the Pacific Northwest and Gulf coast, heat will be building across the Northern to Central Plains over the next two days, with much above average temperatures expected. This hot spell, however, will be short lived with cooler temperatures expected across these regions by the end of the week. The hot temps expected across the Northern to Central Plains over the next two days are not expected to produce any records. Areas of New Mexico and Arizona that have received some much needed rains over the past few weeks will begin to move toward a less active precipitation pattern this week. Scattered monsoonal showers are still expected across the Southwest into the Southern Rockies, but precipitation totals are expected to be less than previous days. These regions continue to suffer from severe to exceptional long term drought conditions. The above mentioned cold front sinking into the Gulf coastal regions early this week is expected to become stationary along the Gulf coast and into the Southeast. Showers and thunderstorms should be active in the vicinity of this front over the next several day, producing locally heavy rains and isolated flash flooding.
