The overall synoptic pattern for the next few days will feature troughing across the northern tier of the country and ridging over the central/southern tier. Areas of low pressure and their associated fronts will shuffle across the Plains, Midwest and East Coast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will focus along and around the fronts draped across these regions. Locally heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding is possible as well, especially stretching from parts of the Upper Midwest to the Central Appalachians today before focusing around the Ohio Valley on Thursday. Severe thunderstorms are especially likely over portions of eastern Montana and Mid-Atlantic before expanding into the Southeast on Thursday. Damaging wind gusts and large hail will be the primary threats from any severe thunderstorms. Elsewhere, temperatures continue to remain dangerously high over much of the Mid-South where Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories are currently in effect. High temperatures for much of Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, eastern Tennessee and Arkansas are expected to be in the upper 90s to low 100s today and Thursday. Lows in the upper 70s to low 80s will offer little respite overnight and are likely to tie or break existing records over the next few days. Excessive heat is especially dangerous for vulnerable populations. Be sure to check in on friends and loved ones frequently. West Coast temperatures begin to moderate over the coming days. Elevated fire concerns continue over the Great Basin through Thursday. Kebede Graphics are available at https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_ndfd.php
