A shortwave trough embedded within an upper-level ridge will continue to draw monsoonal moisture up and into western/central Nevada today. Scattered thunderstorms and isolated pockets of heavy rainfall may lead to the possiblity of flash flooding. Therefore, a Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall leading to Flash Flooding is in effect for portions of western/central Nevada as well as eastern California today. Synoptically driven showers and thunderstorms will impact portions of the Midwest and East today as a weak upper trough swings through the region. Some thunderstorms may turn severe over parts of the Ohio Valley where the Storm Predicion Center issued a Slight Risk of Severe Thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall may focus over parts of the Central/Southern Appalachians due to a weak upper-disturbance that that moves through the Tennessee Valley. A Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall leading to Flash Flooding is in effect for parts of eastern Tennessee/Kentucky, southern West Virginia, northern Georgia and southwestern Virginia/North Carolina today. An area of low pressure will glide across southern Canada on Tuesday leading to the threat of severe weather across parts of the Upper Midwest Tuesday night. The anomalously warm airmass responsible for the ongoing excessive heat situation in the Pacific Northwest will expand eastward into the Northern/Central Plains today. Record temperatures are likely to be tied or broken across the Pacific Northwest this afternoon/evening. Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat advisories are currently in effect for interior portions of the Pacific Northwest. Highs will soar into the upper 90s and low 100s over the Northern/Central Plains on Tuesday which may also tie or break temperature records. This anomalous heat paired with dry and somewhat windy conditions may cause fires to start over the next couple of days. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Critical Risk of Fires for these areas where Red Flag Warnings are also in effect.
