southern Plains to the mid-Mississippi Valley the next couple of days...

northern California today before the next round arriving by Friday night...

A meandering front interacting with an energetic jet stream from the
subtropics will continue to trigger episodes of active weather across the
south-central portion of the mainland U.S. over the next couple of days. 
This interaction has already set up a stream of moderate to heavy rain
from northern Texas across Oklahoma toward the mid-Mississippi Valley
early this morning to the north of the meandering front.  The focus of the
heaviest rains will gradually shift east into the mid-Mississippi and
Tennessee Valleys as the day progresses before reaching into Virginia and
North Carolina tonight with a gradual tapering of rain intensity.  Behind
this moisture stream, a low pressure wave is forecast to develop along the
front and move across the central Plains tonight and into Friday with a
renewed round of moderate rainfall tracking through the mid-Mississippi
and Tennessee Valleys tonight into Friday.  North of the track of the low
pressure wave, temperatures will be cold enough to support mixed
precipitation (including some freezing rain and drizzle) and snow over the
central/northern Plains today, reaching into the upper Midwest by Friday
morning, where a few inches of snow is expected.  This system is forecast
to dissipate on Friday as it reaches the Great Lakes.  However, another
low pressure wave is forecast to form once again over the central High
Plains Friday night and then track quickly to the east, bringing another
around of moderate to heavy rain to the same general region from the
southern Plains eastward to the mid-Mississippi Valley by Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, unsettled weather is in store for the West Coast as a couple of
broad and energetic systems from the Pacific are in the forecast.  The
first system is currently bringing low elevation rainfall and heavy high
elevation snows into the Pacific Northwest this morning.  The
precipitation will spread farther south into north California tonight, as
well as farther inland as mountain snow across the Intermountain region. 
A large low pressure system will quickly follow in the wake of the first
system with more heavy low-elevation rains and heavy mountain snows
reaching the Pacific Northwest and northern California Friday night and
continuing into the weekend.
