Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 338 PM EST Mon Feb 3 2014 Valid 00Z Tue Feb 4 2014 - 00Z Thu Feb 6 2014 ***Another low pressure system to affect the Eastern U.S.*** ***Scattered snow showers over the Rockies*** ***Remaining bitterly cold over the Northern Plains*** After a quick moving winter storm brought significant accumulating snow to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and New England on Monday, Tuesday will be relatively uneventful with partly cloudy skies and still cold. A developing surface low over the Deep South on Tuesday is forecast to develop and track towards the northeast over the Ohio Valley by Wednesday. A secondary low is forecast to form near the Mid-Atlantic coast and become the primary low as it moves offshore Wednesday night. This storm system is expected to bring widespread snow and mixed wintry precipitation from the Central Plains to the Northeast. A deformation zone should become established over parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri and this will likely result in a swath of heavy snow during the day on Tuesday. Over the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, snow is forecast for interior areas of the Northeast, and a wintry mix near the coast and into Maryland and Pennsylvania. Showers and thunderstorms are a good possibility over the Deep South as plenty of Gulf moisture is advected northward. Elsewhere across the continental U.S., expect isolated to scattered snow showers over the Rocky Mountains, especially over the favored terrain. Over the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, the severe cold should remain unabated through midweek with northwest flow from Canada continuing along with a massive surface high (1050+ mb!) slowly settling southward into the northern U.S. D.
