Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 355 PM EST Sat Feb 08 2014 Valid 00Z Sun Feb 09 2014 - 00Z Tue Feb 11 2014 ***Active weather pattern will continue for the Western U.S.*** ***Periods of light snow from the Midwest to the Northeast*** ***Remaining very cold over the northern tier states*** Weather will remain active across the Western U.S. this weekend where persistent onshore flow will bring an abundance of moisture inland. Weak pieces of energy embedded in the flow aloft should help ignite widespread precipitation surrounding a frontal boundary stretched through Oregon...the Intermountain West...and Central Rockies. The sufficient moisture supply in combination with the terrain should make for impressive multi-day totals...especially over western Oregon and down across northern California. In general...snow levels will be on the rise out west...but snowfall will still be measured in feet along some of the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada...Wasatch...and Uinta ranges. Also...a warm front surging northward in the Pacific will bring a threat for freezing rain over northwest Oregon. A surface low is expected to deepen off the Southeast coast and then quickly race out into the Atlantic on Saturday...but not before bringing some rain into the Carolina coasts and northern Florida. Farther north...light snows be possible with a series of weak impulses rippling through the Midwest...Northeast...and northern Mid-Atlantic states this weekend. Limited moisture and the quick progression of these systems should keep snowfall accumulations to a minimum. Hamrick Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
