Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 354 AM EST Sun Feb 09 2014 Valid 12Z Sun Feb 09 2014 - 12Z Tue Feb 11 2014 ...Another day of much needed precipitation expected out West... ...Light snows possible across the Ohio Valley...Northeast...and northern Mid-Atlantic states on Sunday... ...Winter precipitation developing over the Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys Monday night... Another day of much needed precipitation is expected across a large portion of the northwestern quarter of the Nation on Sunday. The highest totals will be over northern California...where a steady plume of Pacific moisture slamming into the rugged terrain should produce hefty amounts over the coastal ranges and down along the Sierra Nevada. Enough moisture spilling inland should also allow for higher amounts across the Central Great Basin and Central Rockies. Although snow levels have risen out West...accumulating snows will still be possible in the higher elevations. On Monday...the focus will shift northward as a surging warm front brings steady rains and higher elevation snows into the Pacific Northwest. Light snows will be possible with a weak system racing through the Ohio Valley...northern Mid-Atlantic region...and Northeast Sunday into Monday. The quick progression of the system and a limited moisture supply should minimize accumulations. Strong surface ridging nosing down from Canada should keep conditions dry and chilly over a large portion of the north central U.S. the next few days. At the leading edge of the high pressure...a cold front dropping through the southern tier is expected to slow down once it reaches the Gulf Coast on Monday. Precipitation should begin to develop to the north of boundary as increasing amounts of moisture get pulled northward out of the Gulf...with a wintry mix possible within the northwestern fringe of the precipitation shield. This could impact portions of the Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys by Monday evening. Gerhardt Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
