Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 306 PM EST Thu Feb 13 2014 Valid 00Z Fri Feb 14 2014 - 00Z Sun Feb 16 2014 ...Major winter storm continues it tracks up the Northeast Coast... ...Heavy rain and mountain snow expected to continue across the Northwest corner of the nation... The significant winter storm which brought heavy snow and ice to places from the Southeast to the Mid-Atlantic continues its track along the Northeast coastline tonight and tomorrow morning. Heavy snow will continue tonight for the Northeast, but will begin to taper off from south to north through the morning hours on Friday. Warmer air streaming in off the Atlantic should keep most of the precipitation as rain for coastal New England, with some mixing in of sleet or freezing rain possible. What seems like a never ending stream of upper level energy and moisture off the Pacific continues to keep conditions very unsettled across the Northwestern corner of the nation. Widespread moderate to heavy precipitation is expected for the Pacific Northwest, Intermountain West, and Northern/Central Rockies through the end of the forecast period. Most of the precipitation should be in the form of rain except for the higher terrain, where significant accumulations could be possible for the Northern Cascades and Rockies. Elsewhere, some very light and scattered snow is possible as a weak clipper system moves across the Upper and Lower lakes. Upstream, a second system drops in from the North-Central U.S. on Friday. This should bring some wintry precipitation to portions of the Northern Plains and Mid-Mississippi Valley on Friday Morning, and spreading into the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic states by Friday evening and into Saturday. Some light rain showers can also be expected farther south across the Tennessee Valley and the Southeast Friday and Saturday. This feature should be relatively quick moving and moisture starved, so significant accumulations are not expected. Monarski Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
