Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 309 AM EST Sat Feb 15 2014 Valid 12Z Sat Feb 15 2014 - 12Z Mon Feb 17 2014 ***Another round of wintry weather on Saturday for the East Coast*** ***Rain and mountain snow continue for the Northwest U.S.*** A developing surface low over the Mid-Atlantic will bring more rain and snow to the Mid-Atlantic region and into New England this weekend. Rapid cyclogenesis is forecast to occur over the offshore waters of the Atlantic by late Saturday as the surface low strengthens over the Gulf Stream waters. Given that this disturbance will be quick moving, along with the majority of the moisture and forcing remaining offshore, snowfall amounts should be considerably less than what was observed on Wednesday and Thursday for areas west of Boston. The exception will be eastern New England and into the eastern Canadian provinces, where blizzard conditions are likely to develop with strong winds and heavy snow. Sustained moisture flow and frontal passages from the Pacific is expected to keep conditions unsettled across the Northwestern corner of the nation and extending eastward to the Northern Rockies. Widespread moderate to occasionally heavy precipitation is expected for the Pacific Northwest, Intermountain West, and Northern/Central Rockies through Saturday night. Most of the precipitation should be in the form of rain except for the higher elevations, where significant snowfall is likely for the Northern Cascades and Rockies.
