Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 449 PM EDT Mon Mar 10 2014 Valid 00Z Tue Mar 11 2014 - 00Z Thu Mar 13 2014 ***Rain and snow for the northern Rockies and Plains*** ***Developing surface low from the Plains to East Coast*** ***Mild start to the work week for many places*** A cold front moving through the western U.S., along with an upper level trough, will keep showers and high mountain snow in the forecast from the northern Rockies to the High Plains. Ahead of the front, warmer temperatures will result in high snow levels, and these will lower with the passage of the front. The storm system emerging over the Plains by Tuesday is forecast to result in low level cyclogenesis over Kansas, with over-running precipitation to the north of the surface low. Much colder air will be arriving behind the front as the system tracks eastward. By Wednesday morning, this low should reach the Ohio Valley and over the Mid-Atlantic by Wednesday night. A band of moderate snow is forecast from the northern Ohio Valley to the Northeast U.S., and heavy snow is likely for New England on Thursday. Gusty winds are likely behind this system as much colder air rushes into the region on Thursday. Warmer temperatures will be enjoyed by many across the Central and Eastern U.S. for the beginning of the work week. Widespread highs in the 60s and 70s are likely from the Central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic, and near 80 degrees farther to the South.
