Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 407 AM EDT Sun Mar 16 2014 Valid 12Z Sun Mar 16 2014 - 12Z Tue Mar 18 2014 ***Much colder weather arriving to the Northeast U.S. by Sunday*** ***Showers and thunderstorms over the Southern U.S.*** ***Late season snow event likely for the Mid-Atlantic on Monday*** After a very pleasant day on Saturday for much of the East Coast, a harsh reality check returns for Sunday and Monday with the passage of another cold front from Canada. This is forecast to drop temperatures on the order of 20 degrees for many areas and this would be below normal by mid-March standards. It will remain mild over the Desert Southwest and into California through this forecast period. A surface low tracking across the Deep South on Sunday will be the main weather maker over the country through Monday. Plentiful return flow from the Gulf of Mexico will draw plenty of moisture into the Southeast U.S. during this time, with numerous showers and thunderstorms expected to develop. Some of these storms could be strong or severe at times. Another surge of cold weather is expected behind this system over Texas and the Central Plains. With the storm system moving towards the East Coast by late Sunday and into Monday, a late season snowfall is expected from the Central Appalachians to the Jersey Shore, and a mix of rain, sleet, and snow farther south into parts of North Carolina and southern Virginia. The greatest impact from this winter weather event appears to be on Monday when several inches of snow is a good possibility.
