Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 521 PM EDT Fri Mar 28 2014 Valid 00Z Sat Mar 29 2014 - 00Z Mon Mar 31 2014 ***Stormy weather across the Deep South and the Southeast U.S.*** ***Rain from the Mid-Atlantic to the Northeast U.S.*** ***More precipitation expected for the Pacific Northwest*** After the departure of a surface low that tracked across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes Thursday night, another area of low pressure is currently developing near the central Gulf Coast. This will become the main weather maker for this weekend along the East Coast and the Deep South. Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected tonight and into Saturday from eastern Texas to the Southeast Coast as a potent shortwave approaches the region from the west, along with deep moisture flow from the Gulf of Mexico ahead of a cold front. Across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast U.S., moderate to heavy rainfall is expected for Saturday and into early Sunday as a stationary front becomes established near the coast along with a surface low tracking across the region. A wintry mix is possible well inland towards the Canadian border. Out West, a mid-level shortwave and a cold front moving onshore will provide unsettled weather for much of the weekend across the northwestern corner of the U.S. The storm system will produce locally heavy mountain snow over parts of the Northern and Central Rockies, and rain/snow showers for the Northern Intermountain Region. Heavy rain is likely for the lower elevations of northern California and southern Oregon through Saturday as persistent flow from the Pacific is lifted by the local mountain ranges.
