Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 1030 AM EDT Sat Apr 12 2014 Valid 12Z Sat Apr 12 2014 - 12Z Mon Apr 14 2014 ***Warm weather continues east of the Rockies*** ***Significant snow likely for the Rocky Mountains*** ***Storm system develops over the Southern Plains this weekend*** The warm and pleasant spring-like temperatures are forecast to continue through the weekend for much of the central and eastern parts of the U.S. with a warm front lifting northward to near the Canadian border. Daily highs in the 70s and 80s will be commonplace east of the High Plains this weekend, along with sunny to partly cloudy skies. Across the northern tier of the country, a cold front dropping southward out of Canada will bring a fresh surge of colder weather from the northern Rockies to the Upper Midwest. Moisture from this front is likely to fall in the form of snow for the higher elevations of the Rockies. By Sunday night, an upslope snow event is forecast to materialize over Colorado and into southern Wyoming with moist easterly flow interacting with the terrain. Several inches of snowfall is likely. By Saturday evening, a surface low is forecast to develop in the lee of the Rockies over western Kansas, and this is expected to become the next big weather maker by the end of the weekend and early next week across the central U.S. Strong southerly flow ahead of this feature will advect increasing amounts of moisture northward into the central U.S. ahead of a strong cold front. This is likely to result in numerous showers and thunderstorms breaking out from Texas to the Great Lakes for Sunday and Monday, and severe weather and heavy rainfall are a distinct possibility with any thunderstorm complexes that develop.
