Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 356 AM EDT Sun Apr 13 2014 Valid 12Z Sun Apr 13 2014 - 12Z Tue Apr 15 2014 ***Warm weather continues for the Eastern U.S.*** ***Significant snow likely for the Rocky Mountains*** ***Strong storm system developing over the Central U.S.*** The warm and pleasant spring-like temperatures are forecast to continue through Monday for much of the eastern third of the U.S. with a warm front lifting northward into Canada and ahead of a strong cold front to the west. Daily highs in the 70s and 80s will be commonplace for Sunday and Monday, along with sunny to partly cloudy skies. A few 90s are possible in southern Texas before the cold front moves through. By Sunday evening, an upslope snow event is forecast to materialize over Colorado and into southern Wyoming with moist easterly flow being forced over the terrain. Some light snow is likely for western Kansas and Nebraska as well, with several inches of snowfall for the Front Range of the central Rockies. Abrupt temperature drops are expected as a strong cold front moves south. Over the central Plains, a surface low is currently developing, and this is expected to become the next big weather maker through Monday for the eastern half of the country. Strong southerly flow ahead of this feature will advect increasing amounts of moisture northward into the central U.S. ahead of a strong cold front. This is likely to result in numerous showers and thunderstorms breaking out from Texas to the Great Lakes for Sunday and Monday, and severe weather and heavy rainfall are a distinct possibility with any thunderstorm complexes that develop. Showers and storms are expected to reach the East Coast by Monday night as the cold front moves eastward. Hamrick Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
