Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 403 AM EDT Fri May 9 2014 Valid 12Z Fri May 9 2014 - 12Z Sun May 11 2014 ***Severe weather threat continues across Central U.S.*** ***Turning much colder over the Rocky Mountains*** ***Warm and humid weather for the Eastern U.S.*** A strong low-pressure system lifting northeastward into Ontario on Friday will be the focus for showers and thunderstorms with its associated cold front. This activity is likely to occur from the Upper Midwest to the Southern Plains with plenty of moisture in place along with instability aloft. Strong and severe thunderstorms are expected for some of these areas for the end of the week. Heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding is also possible. Over the Inter-Mountain West and Rocky Mountains, a deepening upper level trough is forecast to result in a pattern change this weekend with much colder weather over this region. Widespread snow is likely to develop over the central Rockies by Sunday morning, with snow levels lowering to the valley floors by the end of this forecast period. Across the eastern states, it will feel more like June with high temperatures expected to be in the 80s and lower 90s from the Deep South to the Mid-Atlantic, along with noticeable levels of humidity. A warm front will move slowly northeastward, bringing the summer-like warmth northward. A cold front will bring slightly cooler weather to the Mid-Atlantic region for this weekend before another warm-up early next week.
