Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 415 AM EDT Sun May 18 2014 Valid 12Z Sun May 18 2014 - 12Z Tue May 20 2014 ...Severe storms possible in southeast Montana today... ...Cooler temperatures for much of the west but warmer temperatures in the southern Plains on Monday... In the west, a developing cold front will move eastward out of the northern Rockies and onto the high Plains by early Monday. Warm and moist air surging northward ahead of the front will support an expanding area of precipitation with embedded strong to severe thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center placed southeastern Montana in a slight risk for severe storms today. Cooler temperatures will filter into much of the western states behind the cold front while ahead of it much warmer air (15-20 degrees above average) will spread into the TX/OK panhandles and southwestern KS on Monday. Widespread rain is likely on Monday over the upper Midwest in advance of the warm front though the chances of severe weather will be quite diminished. In the east, a storm system off the northeast coast will very slowly ease out to sea and dissipate on Monday. This will keep a chance of rain in the forecast for much of Maine today and Monday. A separate stalled frontal boundary draped from Texas through MS/AL into Georgia will weaken later today as high pressure slips southeastward from the Ohio valley toward NC/SC. Scattered showers and storms will be possible today with some isolated severe thunderstorms over GA but that shower activity will push offshore later tonight.
