Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 423 AM EDT Tue May 20 2014 Valid 12Z Tue May 20 2014 - 12Z Thu May 22 2014 ...Severe thunderstorms possible over northeastern Colorado and in the Midwest... ...Cooler temperatures for California and Nevada... An area of low pressure will continue to track eastward through the upper Midwest and western Great Lakes today and tonight. An area of light to moderate rain already well ahead of the cold front will continue through Michigan and Ontario and then eventually New York state. With daytime heating, thunderstorms are quite possibly along and just ahead of the cold front in the warm air up to the warm front to the east. To the west, a significant upper level system will push through California into Nevada today, bringing some needed rain to the very dry areas of western Nevada. Precipitation, including some snow at higher elevations, should be confined to the Sierras and points east. Cooler temperatures will accompany the system and a surface cold front will become more apparent as it pushes through the deserts. Lastly, along the tail end of the boundary that moves through the east today, showers and thunderstorms will be possible over eastern Wyoming into the Colorado foothills/prairies. Temperatures to the south of this stationary front will continue to be very warm today from north Texas to southern Kansas where 90s to near 100 degrees will be ubiquitous.
